The governor general recently announced 78 new appointees within the Order, including three promotions

A psychiatrist who has advanced the understanding of the genetics of schizophrenia. A composer and conductor who has helped nurture the next generation of classical musicians. A computer scientist whose work helped enable the development and adoption of touchscreen interfaces.

These are just a few of the ��ϲ�� community members who were recently recognized by appointments to – or promotions within – the Order of Canada.

The Governor General announced 78 new appointments to the Order of Canada on Dec. 28 (including three promotions). They include Anne Bassett, a senior clinician-scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), a senior scientist at University Health Network (UHN) and a professor in the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; Gary Kulesha, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the Faculty of Music; and Bill Buxton, an adjunct professor of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

“I greatly value the opportunity to celebrate individuals whose perseverance, ingenuity and community spirit have benefited Canadians throughout the country,” Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said in a statement. “As governor general, I have seen first-hand that our communities are rich in both excellence and diversity, which we need to do our utmost to recognize.”

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours. It recognizes individuals whose achievements and service have had an impact on communities across Canada and beyond.

Here is a list of ��ϲ�� faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:

Current and former faculty

Anne Bassett, a senior scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, UHN, senior clinician-scientist in the Schizophrenia Division at CAMH and a professor in the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her research and clinical contributions to advancing the understanding of the genetics of schizophrenia. She completed post-graduated medical training at ��ϲ��.

Ian Burton, a professor emeritus in the department of geography (now geography and planning) and School of the Environment in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was named an Officer of the Order for his scholarship and policy work on climate change adaptation.

Bill Buxton, a current adjunct professor and former associate professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was appointed an Officer of the Order for his research and innovations shaping the way humans interact with technology. A ��ϲ�� alumnus who holds an honorary degree from the university, Buxton’s work on multi-touch systems helped usher in the development of trackpads and touchscreens.

Gary Kulesha, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the Faculty of Music, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions as an esteemed composer, conductor and mentor to classical musicians. A pianist, Kulesha’s music has been commissioned, performed and recorded by musicians and ensembles around the world.

Francine Lemire, an adjunct assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her accomplishments as a Paralympic medallist in cross-country skiing and her leadership in family medicine. Lemire, who won two gold medals at the 1988 Winter Paralympics, is the former executive director and CEO of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Bruce G. Pollock, a senior scientist, vice-president of research and director of the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute at CAMH and a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology and toxicology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his pioneering contributions to geriatric psychopharmacology as a researcher, builder and educator. A ��ϲ�� alumnus, Pollock is the inaugural Peter and Shelagh Godsoe Chair in Late-Life Mental Health at ��ϲ�� and CAMH.

Arun Ravindran, a senior scientist in the General Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems Division at CAMH and a professor in the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine cross-appointed to the department of psychology and the Institute of Medical Sciences, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to mental health research and clinical care, notably in the areas of mood disorders and global mental health.

Alumni and friends

Sara Joy Angel, who earned her PhD in art history at ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for elevating Canada’s visual history and culture as a journalist and founder of the Art Canada Institute.

Bronwyn D.A. Drainie, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for her long-standing contributions to Canadian arts and culture, notably as a prominent radio host and editor-in-chief of the Literary Review of Canada.

Wenona Giles, who earned her master’s degree and PhD in anthropology at ��ϲ��, was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to refugee and migration studies and work to provide people in refugee camps with access to higher education. A professor emerita at York University, Giles helped launch the Borderless Higher Education for Refugees project, which has provided access to tuition-free university degree programs to people living in refugee camps in Kenya.

Tennys J.M. Hanson, who earned a bachelor’s degree from ��ϲ�� Mississauga and went on to serve as ��ϲ�� Mississauga’s executive director of campus development and public affairs, was named a Member of the Order for contributions to health care and education in Canada through her transformative leadership in the fundraising sector. Hanson served 23 years at the helm of the UHN Foundation (previously known as the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation).

Victor Peter Hetmanczuk, who earned two bachelor’s degrees from ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for his enduring dedication and leadership in the Ukrainian-Canadian community and beyond. Hetmanczuk’s many contributions include organizing and financing volunteer missions to provide medical assistance to soldiers wounded during the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Lillie Johnson, who earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for her impact in improving public health within the Black community. Johnson was the first Black director of public health in Ontario and is known for the founding of the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario.

Susan Margaret Macpherson, who earned a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Arts & Science, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her lifetime devotion to dance as an artist, educator, director, researcher and mentor. Macpherson was an artistic associate at the Dance Arts Institute (formerly the School of Toronto Dance Theatre) for nearly 25 years and served as a faculty member at the institute.

Medhat Sabet Mahdy, who earned a bachelor’s degree from ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for his unwavering dedication to building community and improving the quality of life for all in the Greater Toronto Area. Mahdy is former president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto and former president of YMCA Ontario.

Noella Maria Milne, who graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1986, was named a Member of the Order for her volunteer leadership and commitment to community service, particularly to initiatives supporting education, women and youth.

Peter Robb Pearson, who studied political science at ��ϲ��, was appointed an Officer of the Order for his groundbreaking contributions as a filmmaker and for his tireless advocacy of Canadian film and television. The winner of 19 Canadian Film Awards, Pearson is credited with directing some of Canada’s most influential films including Paperback Hero and The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar.

André Picard, health journalist and recipient of an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 2017, was named a Member of the Order for his dedication to advancing public health understanding and practices in Canada as a leading health journalist. A staff writer at the Globe and Mail since 1987, Picard is also a bestselling author.

Joel Quarrington, who earned an artist’s degree from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Music, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions as a world-leading double bass player and respected educator. The Juno Award-winning musician, who teaches at the University of Ottawa, is a soloist and has served as Principal Double Bass of the London Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company and Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Zainub Verjee, a senior fellow at Massey College, was named a Member of the Order for advancing representation and equitable policy legislation within Canada’s arts and culture sectors as a leading artist, administrator and critic.

Flavio Volpe, who earned a bachelor’s degree from ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his work advancing Canada’s automotive and technology industries on an international scale as a leading policy expert in national trade and industry competition. Volpe is president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.

A science policy visionary who transformed the landscape for Canadian health research. A game-changing basketball executive. A composer who draws from Anishinaabe teachings and classical musical training to hone her own contemporary sound.

These are some of the members of the ��ϲ�� community recently recognized with the Order of Canada.

The Governor General announced 85 appointments to the Order of Canada on June 30, including one promotion within the Order. Alan Bernstein, one of Canada’s foremost scientific leaders, Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri and internationally renowned composer Barbara Assiginaak are among the ��ϲ�� luminaries who appear on the list.

“Today, we recognize individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society,” Gov. Gen Mary Simon said in a statement. “A group of individuals who, through dedication and ajuinnata – perseverance – make our communities and our country better every day.”

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made a difference in their communities with their outstanding achievements and service to the country.

Here is a list of ��ϲ�� faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:

Barbara Assiginaak, an alumna of the Faculty of Music, was named a Member of the Order for “her diverse contributions to contemporary music as a classically trained musician rooted in Anishinaabe teachings.” The Odawa First Nation composer and musician has had commissions and performed across Canada and around the world.

Alan Bernstein, an alumnus and professor emeritus in the department of molecular genetics at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was promoted to Companion of the Order for his leadership in Canadian health research and science policy and support for future generations of researchers.

Bernstein is credited with revitalizing Canadian health research, promoting interdisciplinary research and championing women and younger scientists as the inaugural president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the president and CEO of CIFAR (the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research), among other roles in research administration.

Alumnus Irwin Elman, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ��ϲ��’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), has been named an Officer of the Order for his “advocacy of children and youth, and for his transformational listening tours that give voice to society’s most vulnerable.” An educator, counsellor, youth worker and policy developer, he has influenced fundamental shifts in the child welfare system.

Physician Ronald Gold was named a Member of the Order for his work to eradicate meningitis globally and his mentorship of the next generation of pediatric specialists. From 1979 to 1992, Gold served as head of the division of infectious disease at the Hospital for Sick Children and professor of pediatrics at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Jayanne English, an alumna of ��ϲ��’s Woodsworth College, was named a Member of the Order for her “innovative work at the crossroads of science and art, and for making astronomy accessible to all.” English, who has worked with NASA on coordinating their Hubble Heritage Project, currently teaches in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Manitoba.

Joan Heather Garson, an alumna of the Faculty of Law, has been named a Member of the Order for her "leadership and governance of numerous non-profit organizations within Jewish communities across Canada and around the world.” Garson has held many leadership roles with local and international organizations.

Gary Daniel Goldberg was appointed a Member of the Order for “his decades of philanthropic leadership and contributions to scientific, health, environmental and educational initiatives.” An alumnus of University College, Goldberg served on Governing Council from 2013 to 2020, and received an Arbor Award in 1998 in recognition of his service to the university.

Astronomer and astrophysicist Richard B. Larson, who earned his bachelor of science degree and master’s degree at ��ϲ��, was made a Member of the Order for his immense contributions to our understanding of star formation and galaxy evolution.

Executive John Anthony Lederer – a supporter of ��ϲ��’s Urology Global Health Fund, which provides surgical expertise around the globe with the goal of improving health in underserved communities – was named a Member of the Order for his business leadership and philanthropy toward the community and health sectors.

Physician Jean Marmoreo, an alumna and former lecturer at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her work as a family doctor specializing in women’s midlife health care and advocacy for medical assistance in dying.

Jeff Reading was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to Indigenous health research and “leadership in bringing Indigenous perspectives to scientific and health institutions.” An alumnus of ��ϲ��, Reading is a professor (status-only) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and special advisor to the dean in the area of Indigenous health. He held a one-year term as inaugural interim director of Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health in 2015.

Physician Richard Keith Reznick was named an Officer of the Order for his “innovative contributions to the field of medical and surgical education.” The inaugural director of the Centre for Research in Education at University Health Network (The Wilson Centre) from 1997 to 2002 and former R.S. Mclaughlin professor and chair of ��ϲ��’s department of surgery, he later served as dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University, and president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Robert James Sharpe, a distinguished jurist in residence at the Faculty of Law, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to Canadian jurisprudence both as a judge and a scholar. An active member of the ��ϲ�� community, alumnus and former professor, Sharpe served as dean of the Faculty of Law from 1990 to 1995, departing upon his appointment to Ontario Court of Justice (General Division), now the Superior Court of Justice. He spent more than two decades as a judge on the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Ann Martin Shaw, who graduated from Trinity College in 1962, was named a Member of the Order for her lifelong dedication to figure skating as a participant, official, educator and mentor. Having competed in the World Championships as an athlete, Shaw has judged skating at all levels – including two Olympics – and played an influential role in applying the concepts of ice dance to shape the International Skating Union’s judging system. She was inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame in 2010.

Stephen Stohn, an alumnus of the Faculty of Law, was named a Member of the Order for his longtime contributions to the Canadian entertainment industry. An executive producer of the Degrassi television series, Stohn also represented hundreds of Canadian artists over the years as an entertainment lawyer, including Blue Rodeo and Randy Bachman.

Masai Ujiri, a 2022 ��ϲ�� honorary degree recipient, was named an Officer of the Order for his work on and off the basketball court. Ujiri, president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors and vice-chair of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, is the founder of the Giants of Africa Foundation, director of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Africa program, and launched the philanthropic platform That’s Humanity in 2019. In 2019, he delivered the keynote address at ��ϲ��'s Black History Month luncheon.

A political scientist whose expertise has shed light on the abuse of spyware around the world. A physician who is a leader in cancer prevention research. A trend-setter in Canadian film.

These are just a few of the ��ϲ�� community members who were most recently appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada.

Gov. Gen Mary Simon announced a total of 99 new appointments and promotions on Dec. 29. They include: Ron Deibert, a professor in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy; Eva Grunfeld, physician and professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; and alumnus Martin F. Katz, founder and president of Prospero Pictures.

“Celebrated trailblazers in their respective fields, they are inspiring, educating and mentoring future generations, creating a foundation of excellence in our country that is respected throughout the world,” Simon said in a statement.

“Their commitment to the betterment of Canada fills me with pride and hope for the future. Alianaigusuqatigiivassi. Congratulations.”

Current or former faculty

Ronald James Deibert, a professor in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, was named an Officer for “his leadership and expertise in digital technology, security and human rights, and for his groundbreaking contributions to cyber security around the globe.” The work of Deibert and other Citizen Lab researchers has helped expose the use of cyber espionage campaigns and malicious spyware targeting governments, citizens, activists, journalists and human rights defenders in countries such as Mexico, the U.K., El Salvador and Spain.

Konrad Eisenbichler, professor emeritus in the department of Italian studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been named a Member for “his acclaimed interdisciplinary study of sexuality, gender, history, religion and literature in the Italian Renaissance era.” A prize-winning scholar, Eisenbichler has authored, edited or translated more than 30 books and published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in his field.

Physician and professor Eva Grunfeld was named an Officer for “her influential research in cancer prevention and survivorship care, particularly within a primary care setting.” The Giblon professor and vice-chair (research) in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of family and community medicine with a cross appointment to the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at ��ϲ��’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Grunfeld is also director, knowledge translation research, in the health services research program at Cancer Care Ontario and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.

Allan Edward Gross, an orthopedic surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and a professor of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member for “his significant advancements in bone and cartilage transplantation as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, educator and researcher.” Gross, who specializes in lower extremity reconstruction, earned his medical degree from ��ϲ�� in 1962.

Budd Lionel Hall was named an Officer for “his contributions as a pioneer in the field of community-based research, and for his advancement of knowledge building and research capacity around the world.” A professor emeritus with the University of Victoria, Hall is a former professor and chair of adult education and community development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

Lori Haskell, a former assistant professor in psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for “her groundbreaking and transformational research into the treatment of violence and trauma in vast sectors of society.” A nationally recognized expert in her field, Haskell is a clinical psychologist and a nationally recognized expert on trauma and abuse, and on trauma-informed approaches to mental health service delivery and legal responses.

Andreas Laupacis, a professor with the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer for “his ongoing contributions to the field of medicine and to a broad range of health care initiatives in Canada and around the world.” He is the former editor-in-chief and current deputy editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, and is a champion for enhancing the voice of patients within the health-care system.

Richard D. Weisel, a scientist emeritus at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, University Health Network, and a professor in ��ϲ��’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member for “his leadership as an academic cardiovascular surgeon and for his scientific contributions to the field.” Weisel is renowned for his work in the fields of cell transplantation, myocardial protection and vascular biology.

Ecologist Barbara Lewis Zimmerman was named an Officer for “her contributions to conservation science and for her advocacy of Indigenous Peoples’ rights to preserve the Amazon rainforest.” Formerly an adjunct professor of forestry at ��ϲ��, Zimmerman is a director with the Environmental Defense Fund.

Alumni and friends

Sheila Ruth Block, who taught an intensive advocacy course at ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Law and is on the advisory board for the Program on Ethics, Business and the Law at ��ϲ��, was named a Member for “her trailblazing contributions to law in Canada and aboard, and for her wide-ranging advocacy.”

Angela Ella Cooper Brathwaite, who earned a PhD from ��ϲ��’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, has been named a Member for “her extensive contributions to the field of nursing through her leadership, public policy advocacy, education and research.” She has held leadership positions in primary care, acute care and public health settings and taught nursing students at Ontario Technology University and ��ϲ��.

Allen Charles Edward Eaves, who earned a PhD in medical biophysics at ��ϲ��, was named an Officer of the Order, recognized for “his leading business acumen in the biotechnology industry and for his advancement of cutting-edge stem cell and leukemia research.” Eaves is the president and CEO of Vancouver-based STEMCELL Technologies and is a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia.

Award-winning stage and screen actor Victor Jay Garber was named an Officer “for his outstanding work in film, television and theatre.” While not a graduate of ��ϲ��, Garber has spoken of working on his craft as a teenager at Hart House, telling the Toronto Star in 2010 that, at 16, "I was accepted at a six-week summer theatre training program at Hart House at the ��ϲ�� with Robert Gill as the teacher. I was the youngest one there."

Paula Beth Gordon, an alumna of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer “for advancing ultrasound imaging and technology in the early detection of breast cancer, as a prominent radiologist and researcher.” Gordon is a clinical professor in the department of radiology at the University of British Columbia.

Michael Douglas Hill was named an Officer for “his major contributions to the advancement of acute stroke care and treatment at the provincial, national and international levels.” A professor at the University of Calgary, Hill completed his neurology residency at ��ϲ��.

Martin F. Katz, a special lecturer in intellectual property law at ��ϲ��, was named a Member for “his contributions to the Canadian film, television and media industries, as a producer and leading innovator.” Katz, who graduated from ��ϲ�� with a law degree, is the founder and president of Prospero Pictures, and his work has been nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

Warren Charles Seymour Kimel, whose donation to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine supported the creation of the Kimel Family International Fellowship Training Program in Gynaecologic Oncology & Maternal Fetal Medicine, was named a Member for “his enduring leadership and philanthropic contributions in support of vulnerable members of Canadian society.”

Harry S. LaForme, who received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 2021, was named an Officer “for advancing national Indigenous rights as a groundbreaking jurist, and for championing underserved communities in Canada.” The country’s first Indigenous appellate judge, LaForme helped reframe the discussion about Indigenous land rights and self-government in Canada. He also wrote a decision that led to same-sex marriage becoming legal in Ontario.

Honorary degree recipient Pierre Lassonde was promoted within the order to the rank of Officer. Lassonde – who has been a supporter of the university through his leadership and donations for decades, including a transformative gift that established the Lassonde Institute of Mining in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering – was recognized “for his long-standing contributions to the gold industry and for his transformative philanthropy, notably in support of the arts and education.”

Gerald James Lozinski and Joan Mary Lozinski, who are supporters of the Faculty of Music, were named Officers for “their long-standing support for the arts in Canada, with a special focus on dance excellence.”

Jacqueline Mary Elizabeth Maxwell, who has been a guest drama lecturer at ��ϲ��, was named a Member “for her contributions to Canadian theatre as an artistic director, director, dramaturge and teacher, and for her advocacy of women in the field.”

Ivar Mendez was named an Officer for “his pioneering work in the use of remote telemedicine and robotics to revolutionize the delivery of health and patient care in Canada and worldwide.” Mendez, who completed his undergraduate degree at ��ϲ��, is the Fred H. Wigmore professor and provincial head of the department of surgery at the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Health Authority.

They are Peter Howard Russell, a professor emeritus of political science and former principal of Innis College, and Frank Hayden, an honorary degree recipient and former ��ϲ�� researcher who led the Special Olympics movement.

Other prominent ��ϲ�� community members named to the Order in the most recent cohort include: Aled Edwards, a professor of medical of biophysics who is a global leader in open science research; Germaine Warkentin, a visionary scholar and professor emeritus of English; Zane Cohen, a professor of surgery who broke new ground in the field of colorectal surgery; and Ajay Agrawal, a professor of entrepreneurship who founded the Creative Destruction Lab.

“Those being appointed today come from a variety of sectors, have achieved national and international success, and have shown ingenuity, innovation and generosity,” Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said in a statement that accompanied the 89 new appointments and promotions.

“What’s more, they have made a difference in their communities and for Canada with their outstanding dedication and commitment.”

Created in 1967, the Order recognizes individuals for their outstanding achievements, dedication and service to the country.

Here is a list of ��ϲ�� faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round.

Current and former faculty

Ajay Agrawal, a professor of entrepreneurship at ��ϲ��’s Rotman School of Management, was named a Member of the Order for “his visionary leadership as an educator and entrepreneur, and for his mentorship of students and aspiring business owners.” He’s the founder and academic director of the Creative Destruction Lab, a not-for-profit program for early-stage, science-based companies. Agrawal is known for his research on the economics of artificial intelligence, science policy, entrepreneurial finance and geography of innovation.

Zane Cohen, a professor of surgery at ��ϲ��’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his “innovative surgical methods in the field of colorectal surgery and for his leadership in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.” A ��ϲ�� alumnus, he graduated from what is now the Temerty Faculty of Medicine in 1969 and completed his general surgical residency in the Gallie Program at the university. He rose through the ranks at ��ϲ�� and its partner hospitals, developing innovative surgical techniques that have helped thousands of patients afflicted with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colorectal cancer.

Aled Edwards, a professor in medical biophysics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for “advancing Canada’s global reputation as a leader in open science research by founding the groundbreaking Structural Genomics Consortium.” The consortium is a research organization that’s focused on sharing scientific knowledge in order to accelerate the development of new life-saving drugs and other treatments. As its chief executive, Edwards leads the consortium’s six laboratories around the world.

Gary Levy, a professor emeritus in the department of medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his “leadership and pioneering innovations as the former medical director of the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital.” A ��ϲ�� alumnus, Levy has made outstanding contributions to the study of liver disease, and is currently seeking a way to achieve immunological tolerance that could allow patients who have undergone solid organ transplant to discontinue their long-term immunosuppression therapy.

Donna Ouchterlony, a retired faculty member in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her “pioneering approaches and decades-long commitment to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acquired brain injuries.” A director of the Head Injury Clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital, Ouchterlony’s research ranged from the use of the internet to treat depression in head injury to treating head injury in people without housing.

Peter Howard Russell, a University Professor Emeritus in political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was promoted to Companion for his “extensive and enduring contributions to Canadian society as an internationally renowned political scientist, scholar and educator.” A Trinity College alumnus and ��ϲ�� honorary degree recipient, Russell was the principal of Innis College in the 1970s, authored several books and is best known for his contribution to research into the administration of justice in the country.

Germaine Warkentin, a professor emeritus of English, has been named a Member of the Order for her “lifelong devotion and contributions, as a visionary scholar and educator, to the global history of the printed book.” A ��ϲ�� alumna, Warkentin’s writing and editing interests are in Renaissance studies, early Canadian exploration texts, modern Canadian poetry and criticism, and book history.

Alumni and friends

R. Jamie Anderson, senior advisor at RBC Capital Markets and director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation Board, was named a Member of the Order for his “leadership in Canada’s investment banking sector, and for his far-reaching volunteer service in youth education and mental health.” A ��ϲ�� alumnus, he holds a bachelor of commerce degree.

Naomi Sara Azrieli, chair and CEO of the Azrieli Foundation, was named Officer of the Order for her “leadership in business and for contributing to health care, science, education and the community through her family’s foundation.” The Azrieli Foundation – founded in 1989 – has made significant contributions to supporting brain health research, including the creation of the Azrieli Centre for Neuro-Radiochemistry at CAMH.

William Foster Clark, a professor of medicine at Western University, has been named a Member of the Order for his “extensive research in the field of nephrology and for his leadership following the contamination of the municipal water supply in Walkerton, Ontario, in 2000.” Clark did his internship in internal medicine and nephrology at ��ϲ�� in the 1970s.

Madeleine Féquière, the corporate credit chief for Domtar’s worldwide operations, has been named a Member of the Order for her “distinguished career in the field of corporate credit risk management and for her mentoring of diverse talent in management.” In 2017, she completed the ICD-Rotman directors education program at ��ϲ��.

Frank Hayden, who received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 1999, was promoted to Companion of the Order for “promoting and advocating the transformative effect of sport on the mental, physical and social well-being of people with intellectual disabilities.” He is a pioneer of the Special Olympics movement due to his groundbreaking research – some of which began at ��ϲ��.

G. Ross Peters, a renowned engineer, has been named a Member of the Order for his “multiple contributions to engineering, notably in education and regulation, that have advanced the profession at the provincial, national and international levels.” He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ��ϲ��.

Sandra Pitblado, director of the Stratford Festival Endowment Foundation, has been named a Member of the Order for “supporting Canada’s performing arts through her passionate volunteerism, beloved mentorship and generous philanthropy.” A ��ϲ�� alumna, Pitblado and her husband have been longtime supporters of the university.

Guy Jacques Pratte, a partner at the Canadian law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, has been named a Member of the Order for his “contributions as a lawyer, notably to the pro bono movement, and for his volunteer commitments to the performing arts.” He graduated from ��ϲ�� with a law degree and a master of arts in philosophy. He has been a guest lecturer and an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law.

Sister Bernadette Mary O’Reilly has been named a Member of the Order for her “leadership of Rossbrook House and for her commitment to youth in Winnipeg through education, social leadership and reconciliation initiatives.” She holds two degrees from from St. Michael’s College.

Joel Reitman, president of global investment firm Jillcy Capital Corp., has been named a Member of the Order for his “advocacy of Jewish identity in Canada, and for his generous philanthropy and support for leading neurological institutes.” He is a member of the steering committee at ��ϲ��’s Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Martin T. Schechter, epidemiologist and professor at the University of British Columbia, was named a Member of the Order for his “groundbreaking research in HIV/AIDS treatment protocols and for his leadership in the development of numerous leading-edge health institutes.” He received a master of public health in epidemiology from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Jan Zwicky, philosopher, poet and musician, has been named a Member of the Order for her “contributions to Canadian poetry and philosophy, and for her work as an educator and editor.” A ��ϲ�� alumna, Zwicky holds two degrees in philosophy from the university.

After making their mark in spheres ranging from health care to social justice, more than two dozen members of the ��ϲ�� community have been honoured with a new appointment to – or promotion within – the Order of Canada.

Among the ��ϲ�� community members most recently named to the Order are: Professor Eleanor Fish, who has done groundbreaking work in the use of interferon-alpha in the treatment of disease; University Professor Emeritus Michael Patrick Collins, a world-renowned expert in concrete and structural engineering; Professor Gregory Marchildon, an expert in health-care policy; Professor Sharon Straus, who heads the knowledge translation program at St. Michael’s Hospital; and Professor Emerita Helene Polatajko, an internationally respected occupational therapy scholar.

Also named to the Order is ��ϲ�� honorary degree recipient Murray Sinclair, a former judge, senator and chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission whose work informed ��ϲ��’s own Truth and Reconciliation steering committee.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours. It recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.

A total of 135 appointments and promotions were announced on Dec. 29 by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon.

Current and former faculty

Michael Patrick Collins

Michael Patrick Collins, a University Professor Emeritus in the department of civil and mineral engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, was named a Member of the Order for his research involving reinforced concrete. A world-renowned expert in his field, he addresses how engineers can prevent the collapse of buildings by using new approaches in design to better assess and repair structures.

Eleanor N. Fish, a professor in the department of immunology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and a senior scientist at University Health Network’s Toronto General Research Institute, was named a Member of the Order for her groundbreaking studies on the use of interferon-alpha in the treatment of disease. A ��ϲ�� alumna, Fish is an expert in several infectious diseases including SARS, H1N1 and Ebola.

Gregory Marchildon

Gregory Marchildon, a professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and an Ontario Research Chair in Health Policy and System Design, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to health-care policy in Canada and mentorship of the next generation of policy-oriented researchers.

Helene Polatajko, a professor emerita in the department of occupational science and occupational therapy in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for her work in significantly advancing the understanding of developmental co-ordination disorder in children. Polatajko, who earned her master’s degree and PhD from ��ϲ��’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) is an internationally recognized scholar of occupational therapy.

Sharon Straus

Sharon Straus, a professor in the department of medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine with a cross appointment at IHPME who is director of the knowledge translation program and physician-in-chief at St. Michael’s Hospital, was named a Member of the Order for her academic contributions in the field of knowledge translation and mentorship in epidemiology. A ��ϲ�� alumna, she has also conducted research on the transmission of COVID-19 in long-term care.

Liona Boyd

Liona Boyd is known as Canada’s “first lady of guitar.” Boyd was promoted to the rank of Officer in recognition of her contributions to music. The classical guitarist and five-time Juno Award winner graduated from the Faculty of Music and received an honorary degree in 2004. She has released 28 albums of classical, folk and world music and has composed and arranged hundreds of pieces for guitar.

Sandra Chapnik was named a Member for her leadership in the community and the legal sector. Chapnik, who graduated from ��ϲ�� as a member of University College, is a former judge of the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario who has held many leadership roles in the community and is widely recognized for her efforts to promote the advancement of women and encourage best practices in the field.

Robert Eisenberg was named a Member for his commitment to the revitalization of Toronto’s architectural heritage, as well as his community service benefiting the environment and youth. Eisenberg, who graduated from ��ϲ�� as a member of University College, is co-founder of York Heritage Properties, which known for its innovative and sustainable work in areas such as Liberty Village in Toronto.

Patricia Feheley, director of the Feheley Fine Arts and board member of the Cultural Human Resources Council and Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, was named a Member for her long-standing contributions to the country’s art scene, and for her promotion of Inuit art and culture. A former curator of the Ontario Science Centre and consultant with the Smithsonian Institute, Feheley earned a master’s degree in museum studies from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Information.

Evelyn L. Forget, known for her work advancing anti-poverty initiatives in Canada and around the world as a leading health economics researcher, was named an Officer of the Order. Forget received her master’s degree and PhD from ��ϲ��. She is a professor of economics in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

Gerald Friesen, an author and professor of Canadian history with specialties in western Canada, Manitoba, labour and communication, was named a Member for his contributions to Canadian historical discourse through his inclusive and comprehensive research on Indigenous and ethnic groups in western regions. Friesen earned a PhD from ��ϲ��’s department of history in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Janice Fukakusa was named a Member for her leadership and mentorship in banking, and for her boundless community engagement – notably in education and health care. Fukakusa, who earned a bachelor of arts degree from ��ϲ�� as a member of Victoria College, is a former chief administrative officer and chief financial officer at RBC. She was also the first female chancellor of Ryerson University.

Nona Macdonald Heaslip, a retired public relations executive, was named a Member for her ongoing philanthropic contributions to Canada’s arts sector and for supporting academic scholarships across the country. Heaslip, who was the inaugural manager of public relations at ��ϲ��, earned a bachelor’s degree from ��ϲ�� as a member of St. Michael’s College and an honorary degree in 2009. Heaslip has served on the boards of major theatres and, with her late husband, established the William and Nona Heaslip Scholarships to support education projects at 10 Canadian universities.

Tomson Highway: The acclaimed playwright and novelist was promoted to the rank of Officer in recognition of his distinguished contributions to theatre and Canadian culture. Renowned for such works as Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, The Rez Sisters, The Sage, and The Dancer and the Fool Highway is a former writer-in-residence and received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 2007.

William Humber, an author, journalist, environmentalist and educator, was named a Member for his contributions as Canada’s premier baseball historian, highlighting the many ways in which the sport’s history is linked to the nation. Humber, a selector for the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame, earned a bachelor’s degree from ��ϲ��.

Barbara Landau, a lawyer, psychologist and author, was named a Member for her contributions to dispute resolution and family law reform, and for her advocacy of interfaith initiatives. Landau, who earned her bachelor of arts and law degrees from ��ϲ��, is lauded for her leadership in family mediation, justice and dispute resolution in Canada.

Patricia Livingston was named an Officer for her contributions to global health and anesthesia safety, as well as her commitment to improving medical education in underserved communities around the world. Livingston, who completed post-graduate medical training at ��ϲ��, is an associate professor at Dalhousie University.

Pradeep Merchant was named a Member for longstanding contributions to his community, including his philanthropy and leadership in the promotion of bilateral ties between Canada and India. Now serving as site chief of the Division of Neonatology at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus, Merchant previously completed a post-graduate neonatology fellowship with ��ϲ��’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Lynn Posluns was named a Member for her contributions to research on women’s cognitive health and aging. Posluns, a philanthropist who is the founder and president of the Women’s Brain Health Initiative, earned an undergraduate degree in commerce and finance and a master’s degree in business administration at ��ϲ�� before embarking on a career that included senior roles within the retail, fashion and private equity sectors.

Alexander Reford, a historian with a master’s degree in history from ��ϲ��, was named a Member in recognition of his leadership in the Canadian horticultural community, for bolstering regional tourism, and for promoting both heritage and environmental conservation. A former dean of St. Michael’s College and author of many books and articles on the history of Canada, Reford is the director of Jardins de Métis/Reford Gardens, a 200-acre national historic site on the St. Lawrence River created by his great-grandmother Elsie Reford.

Graham Sher was named an Officer for his contributions to public health, including his role in the development of Canada’s largest blood system operator. Sher, who completed post-graduate medical training at ��ϲ��, served as vice-president of medical, scientific and clinical management of Canadian Blood Services when it launched in 1998, and has been CEO since 2001.

Murray Sinclair, the former senator and former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, was named a Companion of the Order – the highest rank – in recognition of his commitment to Indigenous legal issues and his dedication to reconciliation. Sinclair, whose Ojibway name Mizanay Gheezhik means “the one who speaks of pictures in the sky,” was the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and the second in Canada. He received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 2017.

Carol Tator was named an Officer for her advocacy of social justice and commitment to identifying and dismantling systemic racism in Canadian society. Tator, who graduated from ��ϲ�� as a member of University College, is a professor at York University and the co-author, with Frances Henry, of such books as The Colour of Democracy: Racism in Canadian Society.

Peter Vaughan, who received post-graduate medical training at ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to Canada’s health-care system, and for his pioneering leadership in the establishment and advancement of digital health. He was the deputy minister of health and wellness for Nova Scotia, CEO of the Canadian Medical Association and a Royal Canadian Air Force special operation flight surgeon and colonel commandant of the Royal Canadian Medical Services during the war in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2010.

Other new additions to the Order included: ��ϲ�� supporters Graham Farquharson, Ralph Chiodo, Leo Goldhar, Vaikuntam Iyer Lakshmanan and Barbara Stymiest; former ��ϲ�� professors Roderick McInnes and Peter Zandstra; and leaders from the public and private sectors such as Lawson Hunter, who attended the directors’ education program at ��ϲ��’s Rotman School of Management.

These are just a few of the ��ϲ�� community members – faculty, alumni and supporters – who were newly appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada. One of the country’s highest civilian honours, the Order of Canada recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.

A total of 61 appointments and promotions were announced Dec. 30 by Gov. Gen. Julie Payette. They include: Professor Vivek Goel, ��ϲ��’s former vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives and special adviser to the president and provost who helped guide the university’s pandemic response; University Professor Elizabeth Edwards, an expert in bioremediation and environmental biotechnology; and Professor Heather Ross, director of Toronto General Hospital’s cardiac transplant program.

Current and former faculty

Yaprak Baltacıoğlu, a professor of public policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her long-standing contributions to Canada’s public service, having distinguished herself in several leadership roles.

Susan R. George Bahl, a professor in the department of pharmacology and toxicology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her pioneering contributions to the fields of molecular pharmacology and neuroendocrinology. She holds a Canada Research Chair in molecular neuroscience and is a member of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience.

John Challis, a University Professor Emeritus in the departments of physiology and obstetrics and gynaecology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for his seminal contributions to the fields of obstetrics and gynaecology, and to health research and innovation in Canada and abroad. Challis previously served as chair of the department of physiology and as ��ϲ��’s vice-president, research and associate provost.

Elizabeth Edwards, a University Professor in the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, was named an Officer of the Order for her foundational contributions to bioremediation and for amplifying the value of cross disciplinary collaboration. Edwards oversees two multidisciplinary research networks at ��ϲ�� that envision using micro-organisms to create renewable plastics, less expensive pharmaceuticals and energy from waste.

Vivek Goel, a professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and a special adviser to the president and provost who is helping guide ��ϲ��’s COVID-19 planning and response, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions as an academic and administrator who is committed to the advancement of public health services, evidence-based health care and research innovation. Goel, who was ��ϲ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives from 2015 to 2020, was also the founding head of Public Health Ontario.

Michael A.S. Jewett, a professor of urology in the department of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his life-saving innovations in surgical oncology and for his advocacy of patient-centred clinical care. Jewett is the sponsor of the Dr. Michael Jewett Graduate Award, awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled in a PhD program associated with the division of urology.

Daniel Heath Justice, a former faculty member in the department of English, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the field of contemporary Indigenous studies in Canada and abroad. A Colorado-born citizen of Canada and the Cherokee First Nation, Justice was awarded ��ϲ��’s Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize in 2010.

Morris Moscovitch, a professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to the fields of clinical neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, notably his ground-breaking memory research. Moscovitch is a senior scientist at the Rotman Research Institute and Baycrest Centre, where he is also the Max and Gianna Glassman Chair in Neuropsychology and Aging.

Daniel John Taylor, an associate professor and head of the early music program in the Faculty of Music and a countertenor opera singer, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his achievements as an internationally renowned opera singer and for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of Canadian singers.

Heather Ross, a professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her contributions to Canadian cardiac care as a clinician, translational researcher and field leader. A ��ϲ�� alumna, she is also division head of cardiology at the University Health Network's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and scientific lead at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research.

Alumni and friends

John Borrows was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his scholarly work on Indigenous rights and legal traditions, which have had a significant impact across Canada and abroad. A member of the Chippewas of the Nawash First Nation, Borrows graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Victoria College, before going on to earn two degrees from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Law.

Michael S.W. Bradstreet, who earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology from New College, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his leadership in the protection of natural habitats and for his innovative bird conservation initiatives. Bradstreet has written extensively about northern birds and mammals, and was a long-time senior adviser with the Nature Conservancy of Canada and served as executive director of Long Point Bird Observatory and Bird Studies Canada.

Brian Cherney, an award-winning composer whose works have been performed and broadcast throughout Canada and in a number of countries around the world, was named a Member of the Order for his lifelong devotion to Canadian music as an internationally renowned composer, educator and scholar. Cherney earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance, a master’s degree in composition and a doctoral degree in musicology from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Music.

Rita Davies, chair of the Ontario Arts Council and former director of culture for the City of Toronto, was named a Member of the Order for her leadership at the helm of several cultural organizations and for her steadfast devotion to the arts. Davies earned a master’s degree in drama from ��ϲ��’s Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies.

Jacalyn Duffin, a medical historian and haematologist, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her leadership as an academic and mentor in the field of medical history. Duffin earned her medical degree from ��ϲ�� in 1974.

John Hartman, one of Canada’s preeminent painters, was named a Member of the Order for enriching Canadian contemporary art by bringing landscapes and cityscapes to life on printing plates, canvas and paper. Hartman is a noted supporter of ��ϲ��’s Art Museum and provided a gift in kind to the centre in 2011.

Leonard Pennachetti, president and founding partner of Cave Spring Vineyard, was named a Member of the Order for his key role in developing the Ontario wine industry and for fostering tourism in the Niagara Peninsula region. He received his master's degree in Italian Renaissance history from ��ϲ��.

Lori Jeanne West, a professor of pediatrics, surgery and immunology at the University of Alberta, was named an Officer of the Order for her leadership in the field of organ transplantation and donation, notably for her breakthrough research in infant heart transplantation. West was a clinical fellow in ��ϲ��'s department of paediatrics from 1993 to 1994, working in pediatric cardiology.

The first woman to serve as dean of the ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. A former federal minister of foreign affairs and minister of national defence. A family physician who advocates for the homeless, drug users and other marginalized groups. A world-leading astrophysicist.

These are just a few members of the ��ϲ�� community – faculty, alumni and supporters – who have been appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in its latest round. Presented by the governor general, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours and recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.

The latest list of Order of Canada appointments and promotions was announced Friday by Governor General Julie Payette, herself a ��ϲ�� alumna. It includes Professor Cristina Amon, who was the first female dean of ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering; University Professor Eugenia Kumacheva, an expert in polymers and nanoparticles; Bill Graham, the chancellor of Trinity College; Associate Professor Philip Berger, a family physician and a longtime advocate for vulnerable patients; and Sara Seager, an astrophysicist who recently played a role in a discovery that points to potential life in the atmosphere of Venus.

Here is a list of ��ϲ�� faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:

Current and former faculty

Cristina Amon, a professor of mechanical engineering and dean emerita of ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, was named a Member of the Order for her contributions to the advancement of the field of engineering, and to research and innovation across Canada. Under her leadership, Canada’s top-ranked engineering school has become a global hub for inter-disciplinary research and education. Her commitment to outreach and diversity led to the number of women faculty members at ��ϲ�� Engineering doubling in the last decade and the number of women enrolled as first-year undergraduates exceeding 40 per cent in recent years.

Philip Berger, an associate professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his longstanding efforts to bring the social determinants of health to the forefront of medical care and for his strong advocacy on behalf of vulnerable patients. Berger, who was named to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2017, co-founded the Toronto HIV Primary Care Physicians Group and established the HIV Project Centre Primary Care Mentor Program.

Allan Borodin, University Professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his expertise in theoretical computer science and for his development of nationally recognized computational models and analyses. Borodin is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and a recipient of the 2008 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Association of Computer Science.

James Drake, a professor of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and surgeon-in-chief at the Hospital for Sick Children, was named a Member of the Order for his leadership in the field of pediatric neurosurgery and for his contributions to the treatment of complex childhood disorders. Drake is a senior associate scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, leads the Centre of Image Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention and is co-lead of the Centre of Excellence in Image Guided Care. He is also co-director of the Centre of Mathematical Medicine at ��ϲ��’s Fields Institute.

Bill Graham, the chancellor of Trinity College and former federal minister of foreign affairs and minister of national defence, was promoted to Officer of the Order in recognition of his sustained contributions to politics and academia, and for his philanthropic endeavours. He earned his honours bachelor’s degree in modern history as a member of Trinity and, in 1964, received his law degree – winning the gold medal – from ��ϲ��. He also taught at the Faculty of Law before being elected to parliament.

Eugenia Kumacheva, University Professor in the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science and an expert in polymers and nanoparticles, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her contributions to chemistry, notably through microfluidics and polymer research, and for her efforts as an advocate for women in science. A Canada Research Chair in Advanced Polymer Materials and fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Kumacheva’s research has been backed by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Connaught Fund, and the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award, among others.

Marietta Orlov was an associate professor in the piano performance department at ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Music and a major donor to the university. She died on Nov. 7, 2020 at age 88. Orlov was named a Member of the Order for her lifelong contributions as a piano pedagogue and for her enduring devotion to the next generation of Canadian musicians.

Alumni and friends

Martha Billes, business leader and controlling shareholder of Canadian Tire who graduated from ��ϲ�� in 1963, was named an Officer of the Order for her achievements in business and for her philanthropy, notably through the creation of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, a nationwide foundation dedicated to providing access to sport and activities to disadvantaged children.

William Blaikie, a former member of the House of Commons who graduated with a master of divinity degree from Emmanuel College, Toronto School of Theology in 1977, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his lifelong contributions to parliamentary service, and for his steadfast commitment to progressive change and social activism.

Philip Michael Epstein, a distinguished litigator and founding partner of Epstein Cole LLP, was named a Member of the Order for his leadership in Canadian family law and for pioneering programs in dispute resolution now emulated across the country. Epstein earned his law degree from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Law in 1968.

Marcia Kran, an expert in criminal law and human rights law and member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of international human rights and development, and for her steadfast advocacy of democratic governance. Kran graduated from ��ϲ�� with a master’s degree in political science in 1989.

Judy Matthews, a retired urban planner and philanthropist, was named a Member of the Order for her ground-breaking contributions to Toronto’s cultural and urban landscapes as an urban planner and philanthropist. Matthews earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College.

Lucy Lynn McIntyre, a professor emerita in the department of community health sciences at the University of Calgary, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her influential research on health equity and food insecurity, and for her contributions to public health policies in Canada. McIntyre earned a medical degree and a master of health science degree from ��ϲ��, where she also completed residency training in community medicine.

Sarah Milroy, who, along with her husband Thomas Milroy, donated to the Miner’s Lamp Innovation Fund in support of research into the prevention and early detection of severe mental illness at ��ϲ��’s department of psychiatry, was named a Member of the Order for her promotion of Canadian art and artists as an editor, publisher, critic and curator.

Peggy Nash, a former member of parliament and senior labour leader, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her contributions to women’s employment equity, human rights and gender representation in all levels of public office. Nash earned a bachelor's degree from ��ϲ�� as a member of Victoria College.

John David Runnalls, former president of the International Institute for Sustainable Development, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his decades-long commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable development around the world. He graduated from ��ϲ��’s Faculty of Arts & Science in 1966 as a member of Victoria College, with a bachelor of arts in political science and economics.

Sara Seager, who graduated with an honours bachelor of science from the Faculty of Arts & Science in 1994 as a member of University College, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her multidisciplinary research that has contributed to transforming the study of extrasolar planets into a full-fledged planetary science. Seager is one of the world’s leading astrophysicists and author of the critically acclaimed memoir The Smallest Lights in The Universe.

Peter Warrian of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his expertise as a lead researcher in the Canadian steel industry, and for his philanthropic contributions to international health issues. Warrian has donated in support of the Christianity and the Arts course at St. Michael’s College, the Canadian Studies Interdisciplinary Prize and the Peter Warrian Graduate Award.

Kenneth Wilson, an associate professor at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine who earned his medical degree from ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for his nationally recognized expertise in reconstructive and plastic surgery, and for his volunteer work on international medical missions.

Honorary degree recipients

Two recipients of honorary degrees from ��ϲ�� were named Companions of the Order of Canada.

Monique Begin, who received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 1998, was promoted to Companion of the Order “for her lifelong contributions to public health, education and global human rights, and for consistently strengthening Canada’s international reputation in these fields.”

Mark Tewksbury, an Olympian who received an honorary degree from ��ϲ�� in 2019, was named a Companion of the Order “for his athletic excellence and sport leadership, and for championing equity, inclusion and human rights, both on and off the field of play.”

A pioneering zoologist who championed gender equality. A church minister and politician who was part of Canada’s early LGBTQ movement and performed one of the country's first same-sex marriages. And a professor in the Faculty of Medicine who's known around the world for his expertise on diabetes.

These are just a few of the ��ϲ�� community members – faculty, alumni and supporters – who recently joined or were promoted within the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours.

The latest appointees to the Order, and promotions within it, were announced today by Governor General Julie Payette – herself a ��ϲ�� alumna. The long list of honourees with ties to ��ϲ�� include alumnae such as Anne Innis Dagg, a zoologist and feminist, and Cheri DiNovo, a reverend and former MPP. It also includes faculty such as Bernard Zinman, a professor in the department of medicine and a clinician-scientist at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute who was promoted to Officer of the Order “for his contributions to diabetes research and for his development of advanced preventative therapies.”

Prominent supporters of the university and its partners were recognized, too.

Heather Reisman, the founder, chair and CEO of Indigo, was promoted to Officer of the Order of Canada “for her contributions to Canadian book publishing and children's literacy, and for her transformational philanthropy.” Reisman and her husband Gerald Schwartz earlier this year donated $100 million to ��ϲ�� – the largest gift ever in the university’s history – to establish the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre and the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.

Current and former faculty

In addition to Zinman, the list of current or former ��ϲ�� faculty who were named or promoted within the Order is lengthy. It includes:

Donald Dingwell, a world-renowned volcanologist, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the field of volcanology and for promoting scientific involvement in public policy. Now teaching in Germany, Dingwell began his academic career at ��ϲ��.

Mark Henkelman, a professor emeritus in the department of medical biophysics in the Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for his pioneering contributions to the field of medical imaging. He's a senior scientist emeritus at the Hospital for Sick Children, director of the Mouse Imaging Centre and a past winner of the Killam Prize for his substantial contributions to the health sciences.

Mel Watkins, a professor emeritus in the department of economics, was named a a Member of the Order for “his contributions as a political economist and for his advocacy of social justice.” He was the chief author of the 1968 federal report, known as the Watkins Report, on the costs and benefits of foreign ownership of the Canadian economy.

Josef Svoboda, a professor emeritus of biology at ��ϲ�� Mississauga and an expert on Arctic ecology, was named an Officer of the Order for “his pioneering research on tundra ecosystems and for his lifelong mentorship of scientists studying the Arctic.”

Ken Greenberg, an urban designer, teacher, writer and former adjunct professor in the master of urban design program in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, was named a Member of the Order.

Anthony Miller, a professor emeritus in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health who has also donated to funds supporting research at ��ϲ��, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions in cancer epidemiology, as well as cancer control policies and practices.

Robin McLeod, a professor of general surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to surgical oncology and innovations in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.

Shoo Lee, a professor in obstetrics and gynaecology who is cross-appointed to pediatrics in ��ϲ��'s Faculty of Medicine, was also appointed an Officer of the Order for his contributions in neonatal medicine.

Alumni

A number of prominent ��ϲ�� alumni were also named to the Order, or promoted within its ranks, in the latest round – but perhaps one of the more familiar names to the ��ϲ�� community is Innis Dagg, who was named a Member of the Order.

The daughter of Harold Innis, a political economist, communications studies pioneer and namesake of ��ϲ��'s Innis College, Innis Dagg obtained a master's in genetics at ��ϲ�� in 1956. Soon after, at 23, she arranged to stay at a farm in South Africa – using only her initials in correspondence to avoid discrimination – in order to study giraffes in the wild. She's credited with being the first to conduct system observations of a large mammal in the wild, even before Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey studied primates.

After returning to Canada and facing sexism in her field, she promoted gender equality on top of continuing her ground-breaking scientific work. In addition to being named a Member of the Order of Canada, she's the subject of a recent documentary, The Woman Who Loved Giraffes.

DiNovo, another alumna, became involved in queer activism in the early 1970s. She served as an MPP for Parkdale – High Park for 11 years until leaving politics to return to the church. The first LGBTQ critic in the history of the Ontario legislature, she was named a Member of the Order “for her contributions to provincial politics and her lifelong advocacy of social justice.”

Other ��ϲ�� alumni were recognized for contributions to everything from health care to the arts and gymnastics.

Alumnus Larry Rosen, chairman and CEO of the menswear chain Harry Rosen, was appointed a Member of the Order “for establishing one of Canada's most valuable retail brands.”

Duncan Sinclair, who received his master of science degree at ��ϲ�� and went on to assume senior academic positions at Queen's University, was appointed a Member of the Order for his contributions to health care.

Sister Sue Mosteller who received her bachelor's from St. Michael's College in 1968, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her work helping people with intellectual disabilities.

Rev. James Scott, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Victoria College in religious studies, was named an Officer of the Order for his work in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and his advocacy of restorative justice.

Alumna Joyce Hisey was named a Member of the Order as a member for her contributions to figure skating as a judge, referee and mentor.

Alumnus Stuart McGill was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to understanding the biomechanics of the spinal column and the development of rehabilitation programs.

Wayne Fairhead, a graduate of the master in education program who has taught at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, was named a Member of the Order for his leadership of the Sears Drama Festival and for inspiring youth to take up the theatre arts.

Daniel Hays, an alumnus and lawyer who was named to the Senate by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1984, was made an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the province of Alberta and distinguished public service, including in the Senate.

Alumna Slava Corn was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to gymnastics as a judge, administrator and volunteer.
