Three students from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine have received Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) Undergraduate Student Leadership Awards.

The annual awards recognize students in the final year of a basic medical science program who have demonstrated exceptional leadership through academic achievement, service to the university and commitment to the values of Temerty Medicine.

"These exemplary life science undergraduates demonstrate remarkable dedication to their peers, communities and the university through their diverse leadership activities," said Associate Professor Ahlia Khan-Trottier, associate dean of undergraduate education. "Their tireless efforts reflect the core values of Temerty Medicine and serve as an inspiration to us all."

Sharon Straus, physician-in-chief at St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, director of the knowledge translation program at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and professor in the department of medicine in ��ϲ��'s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has received an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montréal.

The university awards honorary doctorates to distinguished individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them esteem at home and abroad.

Straus, who completed her doctor of medicine and master of science degrees at ��ϲ��, has carried out influential research focusing on promoting the application of scientific knowledge, improving systematic review methods, optimizing patient care and geriatric medicine.

The author of three medical textbooks and over 650 publications, she holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Knowledge Translation and Quality of Care, and is set to assume the position of executive vice-president, clinical and chief medical officer at Unity Health Toronto effective Sept. 1, 2024.

Straus received her honorary doctorate at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine's convocation ceremony on Aug. 24.

Four alumni of the ��ϲ��'s Temerty Faculty of Medicine have received 2024 Dean's Alumni Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievements and contributions to the advancement of health care.

The recipients include a leading authority on psoriatic arthritis and lupus, an internationally recognized immunologist, a pediatrician and infectious and tropical disease specialist and an esteemed leader in aging and long-term care.

“Through their leadership and the depth and breadth of their work, this year’s alumni award recipients are deserving of every accolade,” says Lisa Robinson, dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. “They each embody the values of excellence, commitment and compassion that define our alumni community.”

Three PhD candidates in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine have been selected to receive Jennifer Dorrington Graduate Research Awards.

Heta Lad, Delaram Pouyabahar and Justin Sing received the award in support of their research in bioengineering muscle tissue to study critical illness myopathy, mapping the liver at single-cell resolution, and improving mass spectrometry data analysis for personalized medicine, respectively.

The award was established in 2006 as a tribute to Jennifer Dorrington, who was a professor in ��ϲ��'s Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, where she conducted cutting-edge research in reproductive biology and ovarian cancer. It is designed to support outstanding graduate students in achieving their research goals while contributing to the Donnelly Centre's history of excellence in advancing discovery, medicine and health.

“On behalf of everyone on the Jennifer Dorrington Graduate Research Award committee, I would like to offer my congratulations to this year’s winners,” said Gary Bader, professor of molecular genetics and chair of the award selection committee. “Heta Lad, Delaram Pouyabahar and Justin Sing are all exemplary researchers who embody the innovative and collaborative spirit of the Donnelly Centre.”

Sheena Josselyn, a senior scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and a professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the department of physiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been elected a 2023 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow.

The AAAS is one of the world’s largest scientific societies and publisher of the Science family of journals. Its fellowships, launched in 1874, represent a distinguished lifetime honour within the scientific community.

Josselyn, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Brain Mechanisms Underlying Memory, was recognized for her contributions to the field of neuroscience, particularly for establishing the existence of engrams – physical or chemical changes in the brain that correspond to memories.

Understanding how engrams are formed and connected in the brain may lead to effective therapies that target conditions disrupting memories, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The 2023 AAAS Fellows were announced in April 2024.

Aled Edwards, a professor in the departments of medical biophysics and molecular genetics and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the U.K.’s national academy of sciences.

The world’s oldest independent scientific academy in continuous existence, the Royal Society recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted science through its fellowship program. Fellows are elected based on their substantial contributions to fields including mathematics, engineering science and medical science.

Edwards, who holds a Temerty Nexus Chair of Health Innovation and Technology and is the founder and CEO of the Structural Genomics Consortium, was honoured for his contributions to accelerating drug discovery following an open science ethos.

As a fellow of the Royal Society, Edwards will continue to advocate for open science and collaborative research.

Fourteen faculty members from the ��ϲ�� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping to train the next generation of highly skilled people.

“The ��ϲ�� would like to congratulate all the faculty members who have been appointed Canada Research Chairs or had their positions renewed,” said Leah Cowen, ��ϲ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “From reproductive mental health to the economics of infectious disease and theoretical particle physics, these researchers are advancing knowledge and innovation in important fields.”

Fourteen researchers at the ��ϲ�� are receiving 2023-24 Connaught Innovation Awards to help accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies with high potential to have a positive impact on society.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s recipients of Connaught Innovation Awards, whose research is fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges of our time,” said Leah Cowen, ��ϲ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “From harnessing machine learning to improve interpretation of lung function tests to developing low-cost and scalable methods to monitor methane at landfills, these scholars are advancing novel ways to utilize technology to have a transformative impact in areas of critical importance in Canada and around the world.”

The Connaught Innovation Award, which provides one-time seed funding to support the development and commercialization of the researchers’ innovative technologies, is backed by the Connaught Fund – the largest internal university research funding program in Canada. Established 52 years ago through the sale of Connaught Medical Research Laboratories, which is known for the discovery and production of insulin, the fund supports ��ϲ�� scholars through programs such as the New Researcher Award, Community Partnership Research Program, Major Research Challenge for Black Researchers, McLean Award and international doctoral scholarships.

Five faculty members have been honoured with School of Graduate Studies Supervision Awards in recognition of their outstanding and thoughtful supervision of graduate students.

Pamela Klassen, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science’s department for the study of religion who is cross-appointed to the department of anthropology, and Angela Colantonio, a professor in the department of occupational science and occupational therapy at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine who is cross-appointed to the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute and Dalla Lana School of Public Health, received JJ Berry Smith Doctoral Supervision Awards, which recognize excellence in supervision over a minimum 15-year period. Elizabeth Peter, a professor in the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, received an honourable mention.

Cillian O’Hogan, assistant professor in the department of medieval studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and Angela Mashford-Pringle, an assistant professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, received Early Career Supervision Awards, which recognize pre-tenure faculty members who have been supervising graduate students for up to six years.

Four faculty members at the ��ϲ�� are receiving President’s Teaching Awards, the university’s highest honour for teaching excellence, educational innovation and educational leadership.

President’s Teaching Award recipients are given an annual professional development allowance of $10,000 per year for five years, and are designated as members of the university’s Teaching Academy for a minimum of five years. Academy members may be invited to participate in a range of university events including addressing convocation ceremonies, delivering public lectures, participating in conferences and new faculty orientations, or facilitating teaching and learning workshops.

The winners of the 2024 President’s Teaching Awards are:
